One heart and two names
A children’s book about friendship
Maxima, the little blonde first grader girl with the gap between her front teeth brings light into David’s life. She drew a heart and wrote their names inside – Maxima loves him! The boy from Nigeria is so happy about her affection that he, finally, doesn’t feel lonely anymore. Now, the cruelty David had to experience quickly loses its meaning.
They have beautiful days together, days that Maxima and David spend playing and frolicking around, bug hunting, sharing secrets, and making plans. But then David’s happiness comes to an abrupt end when Maxima turns her attention to a new girlfriend.
Hanna Jansen tells us in a sensitive way from the child’s perspective how the boy, who is disappointed, yet feels strengthened by his time with Maxima, learns to open himself up to new friendships and replace exclusiveness with tolerance and loyalty. Leonard Erlbruch enhances the story with his buoyant illustrations.
